Purpendicular

I took half a day leave from work on January 22d, but all in vain. So the fifth of February I first phoned before go shopping. As a result:

1. Vavoom: Ted The Mechanic. The first notes are sounding like in the starting days of Deep Purple, as on a RPM-CD. sounds pretty familiar too (as is the case with more of Deep Purple - Rainbow stuff). I could play that intro 10 times in a row, I even did that. That familiar touch comes of course from the bootlegs (in fact, at the moment I am listening to "Blackless Morsmania", where this song is written as "take the mechanic". BTW a very good bootleg!) The song has a very good rhythm, very good bass and a good Morse. This is one of my favourites on this CD. It surely will become a classic!

2.Loosen My Strings. Good, quiet theme, typical Malmsteen run, Morse will use that in some more songs. Especially the chorus is beautiful, with a very good piano from Jon in the background. For my taste the song could last longer. Ian's voice is very good. Is is possible that this song reminds me a bit of Mike Oldfield?

3.Soon Forgotten. sounds -again- very familiar: the "guitar draw outs" reminds me of a song when I was with the boyscouts (way back in the 70's) and we were allowed (obliged) to dance on that , à la Maurice Béjart, a very famous jazz-ballet-dancer - I think. Don't ask me the title of that, I don't know. I don't like Ian's voice transformed, but that's something you get used to after a couple of listenings. Again that Malmsteen run. When you hear the song for the first time: strange abrupt ending. Kind like the way he is singing "soon forgotten.

4. Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming. Swell start, not typical Deep Purple , no typical Gillan voice. But a very fine song. Something different done by Purple. How many times they must have proposed such a song during the Blackmore days? Beautiful guitar before the chorus, and a decent end-solo.

5. Cascades, I'm Not Your Lover. The preachy voice at the start reminds me of a Mister Bean video(the one in the first episode, where he falls asleep during the unintelligible preach). A strong Gillan-tune (the band)during the chorus, I expect him any moment to sing "No Laughin In Heaven" (one of my favourite Gillan songs). Very good Lord solo, perfectly followed by Steve.

6. The Aviator. A Jethro Tull song (even with the voice sounding like the other Ian (Anderson) and with a piece of Uriah Heep in it (The Magician's Birthday). If you don't believe me, about all those resemblances, feel free to listen for yourself; honestly I don't look for it specially, it just strikes my attention. That piece of flute sounds very interesting, in the background even a bagpipe? Again a bit à la Mike Oldfield. This is also one of my favourite numbers.

7. Rosa's Cantina. A new version of Hush? One is expecting any moment, especial by Jon's Hammond: "na nana na..." Beautiful bass, good mouthwrapper (as they say it). Lord is having a good time, but I had to hear it a couple of times before I started tasting it.

8. A Castle Full Of Rascalls. A title song which could come from pink Floyd. A hotchpotch of known Purple songs: amongst others: One Man's Meat, Speed King... Good tempovaries are keeping exciting. . Quiet piece by Morse.

9. A touch away. Again something Jethro Tull-ish. Surely to be played during a MTV unplugged. This is the better Lord, with a genius organ -and guitar -run.

10. Hey Sisco. There it is again: that voice! (those transformations were also to be heard on T.B.R.O.). The beautiful tranquil part is good filled up by paicey's tight work. This is one of the lesser songs of the CD. Saved by a good morse-solo, again in interaction with Jon.

11. Somebody Stole My Guitar. very well known riff, help, I don't know where from! Otherwise a good flowing number.

12. The Purpendicular Waltz. (I had to do a few practises to try to pronounce that word a bit decent). Spaghetti-western-mouthorgan. And a good guitar-tempo-variation. There is a lot to be discovered in this song, but one has to hear it several times to like this one (on the contrary with most of the songs on this CD). On the bootlegs, I did not like it.

I could not find any "bad" song on this CD. There is a very good interaction between Jon and Steve, they complete each other very well, a bit like Jon and Ritchie did, in their early days, that promises for their future concerts!! Everybody plays on everything on this album, not like on the new Rainbow where you hardly notice the bass and drums. I would have bought this CD too, without the name "Deep Purple" on it. I seldom by anything else (except DP family, uriah Heep, Gallagher and some blues-rock).

Blackwho? I must honestly admit that, much to my regret, I did not miss Ritchie on this CD! His departure did, at least have a good point: we now have 2 bands to spend our money on! I hope that "the battle rages on" for a long time between the 2 bands!
